Co-op youth shape tomorrow

One of the best parts of my job as general manager of the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) is talking with the incredible young people who come through our Youth Tour program. Recently, I had the chance to have a conversation with Adam Luna, one of this year’s delegates from Lake Region Electric Cooperative, and it reminded me how much hope there is for the future of our cooperatives.

Adam is applying for an internship with the U.S. Senate, and given that it’s election season, our conversation naturally touched on the challenges and opportunities facing rural America. Adam gets it — he understands how electric cooperatives work and why our mission of providing safe, affordable and reliable power is critical. He also recognizes the role we play in the bigger conversations happening around energy, policy and the environment.

What stood out to me was Adam’s clear understanding that our cooperatives aren’t tied to any political party. We’re bipartisan, and always have been, because keeping the lights on, supporting rural communities and finding real solutions to energy challenges aren’t partisan issues. Whether it’s transitioning to cleaner energy or making sure rural areas aren’t left behind, these are concerns we all share, no matter who is in office.

Talking to Adam was a reminder of why we invest in programs like Youth Tour. These young leaders aren’t just learning about government and policy — they’re shaping the future of our cooperatives. In a season full of political debates, it’s comforting to know that with bright, thoughtful people like Adam leading the way, the future of rural electric co-ops is in good hands.
